Two bags of flat washers can both be labelled M12 and still contain different parts. A bolt may pass through both centre holes, yet one washer can have a much wider outside profile than the other. Dimensions, tolerance range, hardness and finish may also differ.
The M12 description is useful, but it closes only one relationship: the washer is associated with a mating fastener having an M12 nominal thread size. It does not, by itself, define the actual hole diameter, outside diameter, thickness or delivery condition. An RFQ that stops at “M12 flat washer” therefore leaves several purchasing decisions open.
Start with the washer series, not a pass-through test
A plain washer has no mating thread of its own. ISO 887:2000 links the nominal washer size for general-purpose plain washers to the nominal thread diameter of the mating bolt, screw or nut. That is why M12 is a nominal-size reference rather than a hole measurement.
Passing one sample over an M12 shank shows only that the sample can pass over that particular shank. It does not identify the washer series or establish the allowed ranges for the hole, outside profile, thickness and geometry. It also says nothing about material, hardness or coating.
For product identity, ISO 7089:2000 covers a normal-series product-grade-A plain washer, ISO 7092:2000 a small-series product-grade-A washer, and ISO 7093-1:2000 a large-series product-grade-A washer. ISO 7090:2000 describes a chamfered normal-series product-grade-A washer. The point is not to memorise a catalogue: the chosen series and any required chamfer have to appear in the purchase basis.
Product grade describes tolerances, not steel quality
After the dimensional series has been identified, the allowed dimensional and geometrical variation still needs a basis. ISO 7091:2000 identifies a normal-series product-grade-C washer; ISO 7093-2:2000 does the same for a large-series product-grade-C washer. ISO 4759-3:2016 explains product grades as tolerance ranges related to dimensional and geometrical characteristics.
In this context, product grade A or C is not a material grade, a hardness class or a simple “better/worse” label. A dimensional check asks whether the finished hole, outside edge, thickness and geometry fall within the applicable product standard or drawing. That question is separate from the material-performance question.
Dimensional conformity and mechanical properties need separate evidence
Mechanical-property or hardness evidence asks whether the washer material meets the performance requirement agreed for the order under the applicable conditions. ISO 898-3:2018 provides a mechanical and physical property framework for carbon-steel and alloy-steel flat washers with specified property classes used with specified-property-class bolts, screws, studs and nuts.
Passing the dimensional check does not prove the mechanical-property requirement, and a hardness record does not define the washer's dimensional series. “M12, normal series, product grade A” therefore does not automatically specify hardness. Nor is “harder is better” a purchasing rule. The applicable standard, customer drawing or project specification has to state the required performance basis.
The ISO 898-3 public scope is limited here to carbon-steel and alloy-steel washers. Its route should not be copied directly to stainless-steel washers. Stainless material selection and its required evidence remain separate order decisions.
The installation position can reopen the washer choice
Consider a drawing with an M12 hexagon head bolt and hexagon nut. If the flat washer is located under the nut, its series and product grade are checked against that position and the mating fastener requirements.
Now consider an M12 hexagon socket head cap screw with a washer under the screw head. Where the drawing limits the available outside profile, slot or contact location, the washer used at the nut position cannot simply be copied to the screw-head position. A passable centre hole does not prove that the outside profile meets the second drawing condition.
This is not a recommendation that a small series is always suitable for restricted space, or that a large series is unsuitable. It is a conditional drawing check. The illustration shows two possible washer locations; it does not perform joint design, load verification or series selection.
Finish and material add fields; they do not complete the name
“Electroplated M12 flat washer” can still refer to different dimensional series and mechanical-property requirements. ISO 4042:2022 includes non-threaded fasteners such as washers within its public scope and can provide the coating-system basis. It does not replace the product and performance requirements. Its published Amendment 1:2026 is recorded here, but no amendment detail is inferred without the controlled text.
ISO 10684:2004 primarily addresses hot-dip-galvanized threaded steel fasteners; its public scope says that its specifications may also be applied to non-threaded steel parts such as washers. “Hot-dip galvanized” still does not identify the normal, small or large series, and it does not supply a hardness requirement.
A material description works the same way. Adding “stainless steel” does not remove the need to state the dimensional series or controlled drawing. Material and surface condition supplement the product specification; they do not substitute for it.
Use samples to find missing information, not to replace the order
An old sample, clear photograph or trial fit can reveal differences in outside profile, thickness, chamfer and visible finish. It can also show whether the washer is positioned under a nut or a screw head. Those are useful clues when an RFQ is incomplete.
However, one sample passing over an M12 bolt does not prove that a batch complies with a named standard. Similar appearance does not prove the material, hardness, coating system or lot documentation. Record what the sample establishes, then write the remaining requirements into the quotation and purchase order.
A reviewable purchase line
A practical order line can follow this skeleton:

The brackets are not fixed answers. They identify decisions that buyer and supplier still need to close. Spring washers, locking washers, conical spring washers and fasteners with integral flanges have different product requirements and are outside this flat-washer description.
